WHO WE ARE
Organization for Autistic Individuals (OAI) was established in 2012 by a group of parents who wanted to have a specialised school for their autistic children. They wanted to set up a school where individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) could receive a wide array of therapies under one roof.
Since its inception, OAI is successfully running their School of Autism at Andheri West, Mumbai. The school is not just for children on the autism spectrum, but also for autistic individuals who were deprived of early intervention therapies. It provides a number of therapies, pre-vocational and vocational training, and daycare facilities. The most important goal of teachers and support staff is to facilitate independence, and develop self-confidence, so that the kids become productive and self-sufficient, and live a life of dignity.
At present, the school offers daycare facilities till 4 P.M. However, the founder parents are working towards making it a residential school. It is a step towards securing a child’s future. The hostel will be a second home for children whose parents, or siblings are no longer there to take care of them.
Over a period of time, the School of Autism has received appreciation from several agencies. One of the achievements is the accreditation granted by the Social Justice Department of the Maharashtra Government.
In 2017, the school received appreciation from The Improvements Committee of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). On their inspection, the Corporation acknowledged and recognized the school for its well-maintained premises and cleanliness. The faculty and the support staff were also appreciated for their contribution in imparting qualitative life improvement skills to autistic individuals.
Organisation for Autistic Individuals (OAI) is a registered Charitable Trust under Bombay Public Trusts, Act 1950, with the Office of the Charities Commissioner, Mumbai vide registration no. E – 28886 (MUM). In 2018, The National Trust for the Welfare of Persons with Autism & Multiple Disabilities, a Trust set up by the Government of India, registered the School of Autism. So, The School of Autism is a recognised educational institution dedicated to the care, counselling, and rehabilitation of individuals with autism and related disabilities. The school has about 7200 sq feet of classroom space and large areas for physical activities and games.
